Insurance for wholesale distributors.
Products liability for goods you did not make, property for inventory that swings with the season, commercial auto for your fleet, and a review of the indemnity retailers write into contracts.
What wholesale distributors usually carry
- General liability with products, $1M / $2M
- Property and inventory
- Goods in transit
- Commercial auto
- Crime
- Workers’ comp
- Umbrella
Watch for these in a distributor’s policy
- Your suppliers’ coverageWhen a product you sell hurts someone, you get sued along with the maker. Ask each supplier to name you as a vendor on their products coverage.
- Big-box indemnityRetail contracts often ask you to cover claims even where the store shares fault. Your policy may cover less than you signed for.
- Private labelPutting your brand on a product makes you its manufacturer in a lawsuit. It is rated differently from resale, so tell us which lines carry your name.
- Inventory peaksIf stock doubles before the holidays, a flat property limit falls short. A peak season endorsement raises it for those months.
- Employee theftStock that walks out through an inside job is a crime claim. Most property policies exclude theft by your own employees.
What retail chains ask wholesale distributors for
- Vendor endorsementChains ask to be named as a vendor on your products coverage, even for goods you did not make.
- IndemnitySupply agreements ask you to defend the store over claims tied to your goods. We check the policy against the contract.
- Limits and umbrellaMany chains ask for $1M per occurrence plus an umbrella of $2M to $5M.
- Insurer ratingMost require an insurer that meets a minimum financial strength rating.
Questions wholesale distributors ask
Straight answers.
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
Can I be sued over a product I only distribute?
Yes. Anyone in the chain of sale can be named. Your products coverage defends you, and a vendor endorsement from the maker can move the claim to their policy.
What should I check before signing a big-box supplier agreement?
The indemnity wording, the required limits, the vendor and additional insured wording, and the insurer rating. Send it to us before you sign.
How is distributor insurance priced?
Usually on sales by product type, your inventory values, your fleet, your payroll, and your claims.
How fast can I get a certificate?
Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.
Can I pay monthly?
Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
