Insurance for metal fabricators.
Products and completed operations for what you build and install, workers’ comp for welders and fitters, property for your shop and steel, and coverage for loads headed to the site.
What metal fabricators usually carry
- General liability with completed operations
- Workers’ comp
- Property and steel inventory
- Equipment breakdown
- Installation floater
- Commercial auto
- Umbrella
Watch for these in a fabrication policy
- Installing on siteInstalling what you fabricate makes you a contractor on that job. Some manufacturing policies exclude work away from your shop unless it is listed.
- Structural workBeams, stairs, and railings that fail can injure many people at once. Many carriers ask what share of your work is structural and rate it apart.
- Welding on someone else’s siteSparks from cutting and welding are a leading cause of job site fires. Some policies require a hot work permit program, or exclude the fire without one.
- Steel pricesA property limit set when steel was cheap can fall short after a price jump. Review your inventory limit whenever steel moves.
- Welders’ injuriesBurns, eye injuries, and fume exposure make welding a heavy workers’ comp class. Your experience mod carries each claim for about three years.
What GCs and manufacturers ask metal fabricators for
- Additional insuredGCs want both ongoing and completed operations when you install on their job.
- Waiver of subrogationOn general liability, workers’ comp, and auto.
- UmbrellaStructural and commercial jobs often call for $2M to $5M on top.
- Products coverageManufacturers buying your components may ask to be named on your products coverage, at set limits.
Questions metal fabricators ask
Straight answers.
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
Do I need contractor coverage if I install what I fabricate?
Yes. Installing brings job site liability, completed operations on the finished work, and often an installation floater for material before it is set in place.
What drives workers’ comp for a fabrication shop?
Your payroll by class sets the base, since welding, grinding, and rigging rate as heavy work. Your experience mod then raises or lowers it based on your own claims.
How is metal fabrication insurance priced?
Usually on sales and payroll, your share of structural and installed work, your equipment values, and your claims.
How fast can I get a certificate?
Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.
Can I pay monthly?
Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
