Insurance for machine shops.
Products liability for the parts you make, equipment breakdown for CNC machines, coverage for customer material in your shop, and workers’ comp for machinists and operators.
What machine shops usually carry
- General liability with products, $1M / $2M
- Property and machinery
- Equipment breakdown
- Customer property in your care
- Business income
- Workers’ comp
- Umbrella
Watch for these in a machine shop policy
- Aircraft partsMany general liability policies exclude parts that end up in aircraft. If you make aerospace parts, you need aircraft products coverage.
- Customer materialBar stock, castings, and forgings a customer sends you are in your care, which general liability excludes. Add property of others to your property policy at a real limit.
- Parts made wrongRemaking a part you machined out of tolerance is usually not covered. The policy answers the damage a bad part causes, not the part itself.
- Machine guardingAmputations and crush injuries drive workers’ comp claims in machine shops. Guarding and lockout programs are what underwriters check first, and your experience mod follows every claim.
- Spindle downtimeA failed spindle or controller on a five-axis machine can stall a job for weeks. Equipment breakdown pays the repair, and business income covers the income lost while it is down.
What OEMs and prime contractors ask machine shops for
- Products limitsCustomers often set $1M to $5M, and higher for aerospace and medical parts.
- Additional insuredCustomers ask to be named on your products coverage, as a vendor or under the supplier agreement.
- IndemnitySupplier agreements often ask you to defend the customer over claims tied to your parts. We check your policy against what you signed.
- Waiver of subrogationCommon in supplier agreements, on general liability and workers’ comp.
Questions machine shops ask
Straight answers.
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
Does my insurance pay to remake a bad batch of parts?
Usually not. General liability pays for injury or damage a faulty part causes to other property, not the cost to remake the part.
How does my experience mod affect workers’ comp?
Your mod compares your injury claims to those of shops like yours. Below 1.0 lowers your rate, above 1.0 raises it, and some customers check it before awarding work.
How is machine shop insurance priced?
Products liability is usually priced on sales and the industries your parts go into. Property follows your machine values, and workers’ comp follows payroll and your mod.
How fast can I get a certificate?
Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.
Can I pay monthly?
Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
