Insurance for online sellers and product brands.
Products liability, cyber, and inventory coverage for e-commerce stores and private label brands, including imported goods and the insurance marketplaces require.
What online sellers usually carry
- General liability with products, $1M / $2M
- Cyber
- Inventory at warehouses
- Cargo and transit
- Product recall
- Umbrella
Watch for these in an online seller’s policy
- Imports with no US makerWhen the factory is overseas, an injured customer sues the importer or seller they can reach. That is often you, with no one to pass the claim back to.
- Stock at a fulfillment centerInventory at a third-party warehouse is not at your address. Many policies cover it only if that location is listed.
- Goods at seaAn ocean carrier’s liability for lost cargo is often limited by law to $500 per package. Cargo insurance covers what the goods are worth.
- Patents and trademarksA claim that your product copies a patented design or a registered trademark is usually excluded from general liability.
- Card skimmingYour processor handles cards, but code slipped into your checkout page that steals card numbers is still your breach.
What marketplaces and retailers ask online sellers for
- Additional insuredMarketplaces and retailers ask to be named, often through a vendors endorsement such as CG 20 15.
- Waiver of subrogationRetail vendor agreements often ask for it on your general liability.
- Carrier requirementsSome retailers require a minimum financial rating for your insurance company.
- Current certificatesMarketplaces can pause your listings if a certificate is missing or expired.
Questions online sellers ask
Straight answers.
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
How is online seller insurance priced?
Mostly on sales and what you sell. A candle, a phone charger, and a supplement rate very differently, and imported goods with no US maker behind them rate higher.
Do marketplaces require insurance?
Many do once your sales pass a threshold, usually general liability with products at $1M per occurrence, naming the marketplace.
Does general liability cover a data breach on my store?
No. General liability excludes most data claims. Cyber covers notification, forensics, often card brand fines, and getting your store back online after an attack.
How fast can I get a certificate?
Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.
Can I pay monthly?
Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
