Insurance for thrift and consignment stores.
Property, general liability, and crime coverage for thrift, resale, and consignment stores, including consignors’ goods, donation drop-offs, and used products you resell.
What thrift and consignment stores usually carry
- General liability, $1M / $2M
- Property and inventory
- Consigned goods
- Crime
- Commercial auto
- Workers’ comp
- Volunteer accident
Watch for these in a thrift store policy
- Recalled productsSelling a recalled crib, toy, or other consumer product is against federal law, and thrift stores are not exempt. A child hurt by one is a products claim against you.
- Consignors’ goodsConsigned items belong to your consignors until they sell. Your policy must cover property of others, at the value your agreements promise.
- Valuing donated stockDonated goods cost you nothing, which makes them hard to value after a fire. Agree on how stock will be valued before you have a loss.
- Donation drop-offsUnattended bins and piles left after hours draw people who climb in or dig through them. Carriers ask about bin design and after-hours drop-offs.
- VolunteersWorkers’ comp may not cover volunteers. Volunteer accident coverage pays their medical bills if they are hurt sorting or lifting.
What landlords and consignors ask thrift and consignment stores for
- Additional insuredYour landlord, on general liability.
- Coverage for consigned itemsConsignors of furniture and designer goods often ask whether their items are insured in your store.
- Waiver of subrogationStandard in most shopping center leases.
Questions thrift and consignment stores ask
Straight answers.
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
How is thrift store insurance priced?
Mostly on sales, square footage, and the value of your stock and fixtures. Pickup trucks, donation bins, and used electronics add to it.
Am I liable for used items I resell?
You can be. A resold product that injures someone can bring a claim against the store, which is why many thrift stores refuse car seats, helmets, and cribs.
Are donation pickup drivers covered?
Trucks titled to the store need commercial auto. Staff or volunteers picking up donations in their own cars need hired and non-owned auto on your policy.
How fast can I get a certificate?
Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.
Can I pay monthly?
Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
