Insurance for garden centers and nurseries.
Property for plants, greenhouses, and outdoor stock, plus general liability, commercial auto, and workers’ comp, for garden centers and retail nurseries.
What garden centers usually carry
- Property and nursery stock
- Greenhouses and outdoor property
- General liability, $1M / $2M
- Commercial auto
- Workers’ comp
- Business income
- Equipment breakdown
Watch for these in a garden center policy
- Plants in the openMany policies cover plants kept outdoors only for a short list of causes, like fire, and only up to a sublimit. Nursery stock coverage is written for the whole yard.
- Freeze, heat, and droughtDamage from cold snaps, heat, and dry spells is excluded on most standard property forms. Ask what your nursery stock coverage does about temperature.
- GreenhousesFilm and poly greenhouses are often limited for wind, hail, and snow. A heater failure that kills the plants inside is a separate question.
- Spring stockStock can triple in spring. Set your limit for the peak, or ask for a seasonal increase that covers it.
- Planting for customersDelivering and planting trees at a customer’s home is landscaping work. It needs to be listed, and it brings completed operations claims.
What landlords and commercial clients ask garden centers for
- Additional insuredCommercial clients ask to be named when you deliver or plant on their property.
- Auto liabilityClients receiving deliveries may ask for proof on your trucks.
- Landlord requirementsLeases on garden center lots often ask for a waiver of subrogation and minimum limits.
Questions garden centers ask
Straight answers.
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
How is garden center insurance priced?
Property is priced on buildings, greenhouses, and the stock you carry at peak. Liability is priced on sales, with delivery, planting, and seasonal events rated separately.
Are trees and shrubs covered in a windstorm?
It depends on your nursery stock coverage. Many standard policies exclude or limit wind damage to plants in the open, so read the causes of loss before spring.
Do I need a separate policy for a seasonal tree lot?
Usually not, but the lot must be listed as a location. Tree lots and pumpkin patches bring their own slips, fire, and theft risks.
How fast can I get a certificate?
Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.
Can I pay monthly?
Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
