What retail stores usually carry

  • General liability, $1M / $2M
  • Property and inventory
  • Business income
  • Crime and employee theft
  • Workers’ comp
  • Cyber
  • Signs and glass

Watch for these in a retail store policy

  • Holiday inventoryIf your stock doubles before the holidays, check your limit. Many policies add a seasonal increase, but only if you insure your full average value.
  • Shrink found at the countLosses you discover only when you count inventory are excluded by most policies. A theft claim needs evidence of when and how it happened.
  • Theft by staffProperty policies exclude theft by your own employees. Crime coverage with employee theft is what pays.
  • Your build-outWalls, flooring, and fixtures you paid to install are usually yours to insure, even in a leased space.
  • Outdoor signsMany small business policies cover outdoor signs only up to a small limit. A lit sign that blows down can cost more than that to replace.

What landlords and mall managers ask retail stores for

  • Additional insuredLandlords usually ask for CG 20 11, the managers or lessors of premises endorsement.
  • Waiver of subrogationOn property and general liability, so your carrier cannot pursue the landlord.
  • Specific limitsMall leases often require $1M per occurrence, $2M aggregate, and an umbrella.
  • Notice of cancellationMany leases ask that the landlord hear about a cancellation before it takes effect.

Questions retail stores ask

Straight answers.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly.

How is retail store insurance priced?

General liability is usually rated on sales or square footage, and property on your stock, fixtures, and build-out. What you sell matters most: candles and clothing rate very differently.

Am I liable for a product I sell but did not make?

You can be. Stores are named in product lawsuits along with the maker. Your general liability covers it under products, and some makers will add you as a vendor on theirs.

Do I need cyber insurance if I only take cards in person?

Often, yes. A hacked card terminal or store network is still your breach. Cyber pays for notification, forensics, and often the card fines your processor passes on.

How fast can I get a certificate?

Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
