Insurance for non-emergency medical transportation.
Auto liability, general and professional liability, abuse coverage, and workers’ comp for non-emergency medical transportation, from ambulatory sedans to wheelchair vans.
What NEMT providers usually carry
- Commercial auto liability
- Physical damage
- General liability
- Professional liability
- Abuse and molestation
- Workers’ comp
- Hired and non-owned auto
Watch for these in an NEMT policy
- Door-through-door helpHelping a rider from the curb to a chair inside happens outside the vehicle. Auto insurance may not answer, so general and professional liability need to.
- Wheelchair securementA chair that tips in transit is a serious injury claim. Many insurers ask how drivers are trained on tie-downs and lifts.
- Abuse and molestationMany policies exclude abuse claims unless the coverage is added back. With elderly and disabled riders, it is a real exposure.
- Drivers’ own vehiclesPersonal auto policies exclude paid transport. Many broker contracts require every vehicle on your commercial policy for that reason.
- Stretcher transportStretcher vans are often rated separately or excluded from an ambulatory and wheelchair program. List them if you run them.
What Medicaid brokers and facilities ask NEMT providers for
- Auto liabilityMany broker contracts set $1M combined single limit, and some ask for more.
- General and professional liabilityOften $1M each, to cover the help you give outside the vehicle.
- Abuse and molestationMany contracts require it by name.
- Additional insuredThe broker, and sometimes the state agency, named on your policies.
Questions NEMT providers ask
Straight answers.
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
Is NEMT insured like a taxi?
No. NEMT carries medical riders, so insurers look at wheelchair and stretcher work, driver training, and help given outside the vehicle. It is its own class.
Can my drivers use their own cars?
Some contracts allow it, but personal policies usually will not cover paid rides. You need hired and non-owned auto, and many brokers want each vehicle on a commercial policy anyway.
Do NEMT providers need professional liability?
Often. A claim that a driver mishandled a rider or missed a sign of distress can fall outside auto and general liability.
How fast can I get a certificate?
Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.
