Insurance for box truck and cargo van delivery.
Auto liability, cargo, physical damage, general liability, and workers’ comp, for last-mile box trucks and cargo vans making dozens of stops a day.
What delivery companies usually carry
- Commercial auto liability
- Motor truck cargo
- Physical damage
- General liability
- Workers’ comp
- Hired and non-owned auto
Watch for these in a delivery fleet policy
- Unattended truck theftMany cargo policies exclude theft from an unattended vehicle unless it was locked and the keys were gone. On a route with dozens of stops, that exclusion gets tested every day.
- Inside deliveriesDamage you cause carrying goods into a home or store, like a gouged floor or a cracked door frame, can fall between auto and general liability. Carry both so neither leaves a gap.
- RadiusYour policy is rated on how far you run. Some policies limit or exclude trips beyond the radius you listed, so a one-off long haul can fall outside it.
- Peak season rentalsA box truck you rent for the holidays needs coverage too. Hired auto answers for liability, but damage to the rental itself needs its own coverage.
- Liftgates and dolliesMany delivery injuries are strains and falls at the liftgate. Those are workers’ comp claims, and delivery contracts often require comp even for a small crew.
What retailers and brokers ask delivery companies for
- Auto liability, $1MThe floor in most delivery contracts and broker agreements.
- CargoSized to the most valuable load on the truck, often $100,000.
- Additional insuredOn general liability and auto, naming the retailer or the contract holder.
- Workers’ compOften required even when you run only a few drivers.
Questions delivery companies ask
Straight answers.
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
Do I need my own authority to run a box truck?
You need operating authority to haul for hire across state lines, and many brokers will not book you without it. Purely local work can follow different rules, so tell us exactly how you run.
Are cargo vans insured the same way as box trucks?
Mostly. Both are rated on size, use, and radius, and both need cargo coverage if you haul other people’s goods.
What if my drivers use their own vans?
Hired and non-owned auto covers your business if they cause a crash on the job. It does not repair their vans, and their personal policies may exclude delivery work.
Can I pay monthly?
Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
