Insurance for hot shot truckers.

Primary liability with your filings, cargo, and physical damage on both the pickup and the gooseneck, for hot shot operators running expedited loads under their own authority or leased on.

What hot shot truckers usually carry

  • Primary auto liability
  • Motor truck cargo
  • Physical damage, truck and trailer
  • General liability
  • Occupational accident
  • Non-trucking liability, if leased on

Watch for these in a hot shot policy

  • Your personal auto policyA personal policy on the pickup does not cover hauling for hire, even if it is your daily driver. One paid load on it can end in a denied claim.
  • The trailer is its own unitPhysical damage on the pickup does not cover the gooseneck or flatbed behind it. List the trailer with its own value.
  • Oilfield loadsHauling to drilling and well sites is often excluded or rated on its own. Say so up front if that is where your loads go.
  • Machinery loadsOne load of equipment can be worth more than your cargo limit. Check the limit against the most valuable thing you haul, not the average load.

What brokers and shippers ask hot shot truckers for

  • Auto liabilityMost brokers want $1M, even on a pickup and a trailer.
  • CargoOften $100,000, and more for machinery or oilfield equipment.
  • Your filing on recordBrokers check that your insurer’s filing shows on your authority before they book you.

Questions hot shot truckers ask

Straight answers.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly.

Do I need a commercial policy for a one-ton pickup?

Yes, once you haul for hire. The size of the truck does not change that. What you haul, how far you run, and your driving record decide what you pay.

Is hot shot harder to insure than a semi?

It can be. Many insurers see new hot shot authorities as higher risk, so years of driving experience and a clean MVR count for more here.

Can I run hot shot under someone else’s authority?

Yes, many hot shot drivers lease onto a carrier. The carrier’s policy covers liability under dispatch, and you carry non-trucking liability and physical damage.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
