Insurance for dump truck operators.

Auto liability, physical damage, general liability, and pollution coverage for dump trucks hauling sand, gravel, asphalt, and fill to job sites and quarries.

What dump truck operators usually carry

  • Commercial auto liability
  • Physical damage
  • General liability
  • Auto pollution coverage
  • Workers’ comp
  • Umbrella

Watch for these in a dump truck policy

  • Contaminated fillMost auto policies exclude pollution from the load you carry. Dirt that turns out to be contaminated can leave you uncovered unless that exclusion is bought back.
  • Tipping over at the dumpAn upset with the bed raised is a collision claim. Carry collision on every dump unit, not only the newer ones.
  • Spreading and gradingHauling is trucking. Spreading, grading, or placing material with equipment is contracting work and needs its own general liability rating.
  • Thrown rockUncovered loads that throw rock bring a steady run of windshield claims. Tarping every load keeps them down and shows you did your part.

What GCs and quarries ask dump truck operators for

  • Additional insured on autoGCs often want to be named on your auto policy, not only general liability, since your trucks work on their site.
  • Waiver of subrogationOn auto, general liability, and workers’ comp.
  • Auto liability, $1MThe usual minimum to haul on a commercial job, with an umbrella on larger ones.

Questions dump truck operators ask

Straight answers.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly.

Is a dump truck insured as trucking or as construction?

Both, in a way. The truck goes on a commercial auto policy, rated on what you haul and where. Work you do off the truck is construction and is rated that way.

Do I need pollution coverage just to haul dirt?

If any load could be contaminated, it is worth having. Auto policies exclude pollution from the load you carry unless an endorsement adds it back.

Can a loader go on the same program?

Usually, but not on the auto policy. A loader or skid steer goes on an equipment floater, since auto insurance does not cover it.

How fast can I get a certificate?

Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.
