Insurance for motor carriers and trucking fleets.

Primary auto liability with your federal filings, motor truck cargo, physical damage, and trailer interchange, for fleets that haul for hire, with every power unit and trailer on the schedule.

What motor carriers usually carry

  • Primary auto liability, $1M
  • Motor truck cargo
  • Physical damage
  • Trailer interchange
  • Non-owned trailer physical damage
  • General liability
  • Workers’ comp
  • Excess liability

Watch for these in a motor carrier policy

  • The MCS-90It makes your insurer pay the public, up to the federal minimum, for a crash your policy would not cover, like an unlisted truck or an excluded driver. Then the insurer can collect that money back from you.
  • Scheduled units, not any autoMost trucking policies cover only the units listed on them. Add a truck or trailer the day you buy it, not at renewal.
  • Driver approvalMany insurers set a minimum age and years of CDL experience and review every driver’s MVR. A driver outside those rules can leave you exposed on a claim.
  • Trailers you do not ownTrailer interchange covers a trailer you pull under a written interchange agreement. Power-only loads without one need non-owned trailer coverage instead.
  • New authorityMany insurers will not write an authority younger than a year or two, and those that do usually surcharge it until it builds a record.

What shippers and brokers ask motor carriers for

  • Auto liability, $1MAbove the $750,000 federal minimum for general freight, and what most broker contracts require.
  • Cargo, $100,000The usual floor. High-value freight often calls for $250,000 or more.
  • Active filingsMany check that your authority and insurance filing are active before each load, not just at setup.
  • Safety recordMany shippers screen your inspection and crash history before they sign a contract.

Questions motor carriers ask

Straight answers.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly.

How is a trucking fleet’s policy priced?

Mostly on your drivers, your units, how far you run, what you haul, and your loss history. Your inspection and crash record weighs in too.

What happens to my filing if the policy cancels?

Your insurer files the BMC-91X that keeps your authority active. If the policy cancels, the insurer tells the government, and your authority can be revoked unless a new filing replaces it.

Do dash cams and ELD data help?

Often. Many underwriters ask about cameras and telematics, and forward-facing footage can end a disputed claim early.

Is the MCS-90 insurance for me?

No. It protects the public, not you. If it pays a claim your policy would not have covered, your insurer can bill you for it.

How fast can I get a certificate?

Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.
