Insurance for car haulers.
Auto liability, cargo with a per-vehicle limit that fits what you load, and physical damage, for car haulers running wedge, stinger, and enclosed trailers.
What car haulers usually carry
- Primary auto liability
- Cargo, per vehicle and per load
- Physical damage, truck and trailer
- General liability
- Occupational accident
- Non-trucking liability, if leased on
Watch for these in a car hauler policy
- The per-vehicle limitA $250,000 cargo limit can still cap each car at a much lower amount. One high-end car on the top deck can go past it.
- Loading and unloadingSome policies limit damage that happens while a car is driven onto or off the trailer. Ask how loading is covered before your first auction run.
- Keys left in carsTheft from an unattended trailer, or of a car left with the keys inside, is a common exclusion. Lock up and keep the keys with you.
- Condition at pickupA damage claim often turns on what the car looked like when you took it. Photograph every car at pickup and delivery, and note damage on the bill of lading.
What dealers, auctions, and brokers ask car haulers for
- Cargo per vehicleDealers and auctions set a per-car minimum. Luxury and classic car shippers ask for much more.
- Auto liability, $1MStandard for auction and dealer work, and for most broker loads.
- Certificate on fileAuctions keep your certificate on file and often will not release cars once it lapses.
Questions car haulers ask
Straight answers.
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
Can I haul cars with a pickup and a wedge trailer?
Many do. You still need commercial auto, cargo, and operating authority if you haul for hire across state lines. Check that the cargo limit per car fits what you haul.
Is an enclosed trailer insured differently?
Often. Enclosed hauling means higher-value cars, so insurers look for higher cargo limits and may ask where the trailer is parked overnight.
Who pays when a dealer finds a scratch?
Your cargo policy, if the damage happened in your care and is above your deductible. A signed condition report from pickup often decides it.
How fast can I get a certificate?
Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.
