Insurance for towing companies.
Auto liability, on-hook, garagekeepers, and physical damage for towing and roadside operators, from wreckers and rollbacks to the storage lot behind them.
What towing companies usually carry
- Commercial auto liability
- On-hook towing
- Garagekeepers
- Physical damage
- Garage liability
- Workers’ comp
Watch for these in a towing policy
- On-hook stops at the gateOn-hook covers a customer’s car while it is hooked up or on the bed. Once it is parked in your yard, garagekeepers has to pick it up.
- Per-vehicle limitsAn on-hook limit that fits a sedan will not cover a loaded box truck or a luxury SUV. Set it to the most valuable vehicle you tow, not the typical one.
- RepossessionsRepo work is often excluded or needs its own rating, including claims of wrongful repossession. Tell us before you take a repo account.
- Service callsA scratched door from a lockout or a fried computer from a jump-start is damage to the customer’s car. Check that your policy covers service calls, not only tows.
- Legal liability on the lotLegal liability garagekeepers pays only when you are at fault. A hail storm over a full impound lot is nobody’s fault, which is what direct coverage is for.
What motor clubs and police departments ask towing companies for
- Auto liabilityMotor clubs and rotation lists often require $1M, and heavy-duty accounts can ask for more.
- On-hook and garagekeepers limitsSet by each contract, often per vehicle and higher for heavy-duty work.
- Additional insuredThe city, county, or motor club named on your auto and general liability.
Questions towing companies ask
Straight answers.
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
What is the difference between on-hook and garagekeepers?
On-hook covers the vehicle while you are towing or carrying it. Garagekeepers covers it while it sits on your lot or in your shop. Most towing companies need both.
Does my auto policy cover the car I am towing?
No. Auto liability covers damage you do to others on the road, not the vehicle in your care. That is what on-hook is for.
Do my wreckers need physical damage?
If a wrecker or rollback is financed, the lender requires it. Even if not, a truck down for weeks stops the calls that pay for it.
Can I pay monthly?
Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
