What counselors and therapists usually carry

  • Professional liability
  • Licensing board defense
  • Entity coverage for group practices
  • General liability
  • Cyber liability
  • Employment practices liability

Watch for these in a counseling practice policy

  • Misconduct sublimitsMost therapist policies hold misconduct allegations to a sublimit far below the main limit, and some cover defense only. Know how yours handles them.
  • Custody and forensic workCustody evaluations, court testimony, and fitness-for-duty reports are often excluded or limited. List them if you do them.
  • Clients in other statesA telehealth client living where you do not hold a license can fall outside coverage. Check before you take them on.
  • The practice itselfEach clinician’s policy covers that clinician. A group practice needs its own coverage for claims that name the practice.
  • Suicide and duty-to-warn claimsClaims after a client’s suicide attempt or violence toward someone else are the most serious in this field. Carry limits that reflect them.

What insurance panels and landlords ask counselors and therapists for

  • Malpractice minimumsMost panels want $1M per claim and $3M aggregate before they credential you.
  • Individual coverageGroup practices and agencies ask each contract clinician for a policy in their own name.
  • Additional insuredOffice landlords and shared-suite owners, on your general liability.

Questions counselors and therapists ask

Straight answers.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly.

Do I need my own policy if my group practice has one?

Often yes. A group policy may cover only the entity, or only employees. Contract clinicians almost always need their own.

Is a data breach covered by my malpractice policy?

Rarely in full. Some policies add a small privacy sublimit. Cyber coverage pays for breach notices, forensic work, and restoring records after ransomware.

What happens to my coverage if I stop practicing?

On a claims-made policy, past sessions stay covered only if you buy a tail, also called an extended reporting period. Ask about it before you cancel.

How fast can I get a certificate?

Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
