What gym owners usually carry

  • General liability
  • Professional liability for trainers
  • Gym equipment and property
  • Equipment breakdown
  • Abuse and molestation coverage
  • Workers’ comp
  • Employment practices liability
  • Umbrella

Watch for these in a fitness center policy

  • WaiversA signed waiver helps, but many courts will not enforce one against gross negligence or against a minor. It does not replace coverage.
  • Around-the-clock accessUnstaffed hours are their own underwriting question. Many carriers ask about key fob entry, cameras, and emergency procedures before they quote.
  • Independent trainersTrainers who rent floor time are usually not insureds on your policy. Require their own certificate naming the gym.
  • Tanning, saunas, and poolsTanning beds are often excluded outright, and pools and saunas are rated separately. List every amenity you offer.
  • Childcare roomWatching members’ children brings abuse and molestation risk, which many gym policies exclude unless it is added.

What landlords and equipment lessors ask gym owners for

  • Additional insuredLandlords, on your general liability, often primary and noncontributory.
  • Waiver of subrogationLeases often ask you to waive claims against the landlord on liability and property.
  • Loss payeeLeasing companies, on the property coverage for equipment they financed.
  • UmbrellaLarger leases often ask for $2M to $5M above your general liability.

Questions gym owners ask

Straight answers.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly.

Is a member hurt on a machine covered?

General liability defends the claim and pays if the gym is found responsible. Claims about a trainer’s instruction fall under professional liability, so carry both.

Are group classes and outdoor boot camps covered?

Most fitness policies cover classes inside the gym. Boot camps in a park or events off site often need to be added as another location.

What does gym equipment coverage pay for?

Property coverage pays for machines damaged by fire, theft, or water. Equipment breakdown pays when a treadmill motor or console burns out from a surge.

How fast can I get a certificate?

Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
