What personal trainers usually carry

  • Professional liability
  • General liability
  • Products liability
  • Portable equipment coverage
  • Abuse and molestation coverage, for youth clients
  • Umbrella

Watch for these in a personal trainer policy

  • Lapsed certificationMany trainer policies require a current certification from an accredited program. A lapse can put a claim at risk, so renew on time.
  • Nutrition adviceGeneral guidance is usually covered. Writing meal plans for a medical condition can fall outside your scope and your policy.
  • Supplements you sellMany trainer policies exclude supplements and shakes, or cover them only when listed. Tell us before you start selling them.
  • Every place you trainA policy tied to one gym may not cover sessions in parks or clients’ homes. Park sessions may also need a permit and a certificate for the city.

What gyms and studios ask personal trainers for

  • Additional insuredGyms that rent you floor time, on your general liability.
  • Minimum limitsUsually $1M per claim and $2M or $3M aggregate, on general and professional liability.
  • Active certificationMany gyms want proof of a current certification along with your certificate of insurance.
  • Waiver of subrogationSome gyms ask you to waive your right to recover from them.

Questions personal trainers ask

Straight answers.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly.

Doesn’t the gym’s insurance cover me?

Not if you are independent. The gym’s policy protects the gym, and a client hurt in your session can sue you personally.

What does professional liability cover for a trainer?

Claims that your instruction or program caused an injury, such as a strained back from a lift you coached. General liability covers a client who trips over your gear.

Are my kettlebells and bands covered?

Homeowners and auto policies usually leave out business gear. A small equipment floater covers it at home, in the car, and at the gym.

Does my policy cover online coaching?

Many trainer policies cover video sessions. Confirm yours does, and that it covers clients who live in other states.

How fast can I get a certificate?

Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
