Insurance for grocery stores.
Property, spoilage, general liability, and workers’ comp for independent grocery stores and markets, from the refrigerated cases to the deli counter.
What grocers usually carry
- General liability, $1M / $2M
- Property and refrigeration
- Spoilage and equipment breakdown
- Business income
- Workers’ comp
- Liquor liability
- Crime
Watch for these in a grocery store policy
- Slips near produce and freezersSlips are the claim grocers see most. Carriers ask for written floor inspections, and a sweep log is often your best defense.
- Refrigeration failuresA compressor that fails overnight can spoil a whole case line. The spoilage limit on a standard policy is often far below what a grocer keeps cold.
- Deli and hot foodA hot food bar or fryer brings kitchen fire rules into a grocery policy, including hood cleaning and a UL 300 suppression system.
- Leased countersIf another business runs your sushi, bakery, or pharmacy counter, collect a certificate from them naming you.
- The parking lotRunaway carts and falls in the lot are your claims when you control it. Check whether your lease puts the lot on you or the landlord.
What landlords and lenders ask grocers for
- Additional insuredYour landlord, and the shopping center’s manager if different.
- Lender loss payeeLoans for coolers and racks name the lender on your property coverage.
- Waiver of subrogationOn property and liability, in most shopping center leases.
- UmbrellaLarger stores and centers often require $2M to $5M on top.
Questions grocers ask
Straight answers.
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
How is grocery store insurance priced?
General liability is rated on sales, split among groceries, deli, and alcohol. Property is rated on the building, refrigeration, and stock. Floor care and claims history move both.
How much spoilage coverage do we need?
Enough for your fullest cooler and freezer day, not a typical one. Count refrigerated stock before a holiday weekend and set the limit there.
Do we need liquor liability to sell beer and wine?
Usually, yes. Package sales count as selling alcohol, which general liability excludes. A grocer’s liquor liability is typically rated on those sales alone.
How fast can I get a certificate?
Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.
Can I pay monthly?
Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
