Insurance for physical therapy practices.
Professional liability, general liability, and clinic property, for outpatient clinics and therapists who treat in homes, schools, and nursing facilities. Hired and non-owned auto covers the practice on the drive to a visit.
What physical therapists usually carry
- Professional liability
- General liability
- Clinic property and equipment
- Hired and non-owned auto
- Workers’ comp
- Licensing board defense
- Cyber liability
Watch for these in a physical therapy policy
- Patient fallsA fall during gait training is a professional claim; a fall in the waiting room is a general liability claim. Carry both, with matching limits.
- Dry needlingScope for dry needling differs from state to state, and some policies exclude it. List it if you offer it.
- Home visitsOn a home visit, the therapist’s own auto policy pays first. Hired and non-owned auto protects the practice when a crash on the way leads to a claim against it.
- Contract therapistsA clinic policy usually covers employees, not therapists paid on a 1099. Collect their certificates, or add them to your policy by name.
- Therapy poolsAquatic therapy adds slip and drowning risk. Many carriers ask about depth, access, and supervision before they quote.
What hospitals and care facilities ask physical therapists for
- Professional limitsContracts often call for $1M per claim and $3M aggregate, sometimes more for hospital work.
- Additional insuredThe facility, on your general liability, while you treat on its premises.
- A policy in your nameFacilities that use contract therapists want each one insured individually.
- Auto coverageHome health agencies ask to see auto insurance on the car you drive to visits.
Questions physical therapists ask
Straight answers.
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
Does my employer’s policy cover my private clients?
Usually not. An employer’s policy covers the work you do for them. Treating clients on your own time needs a policy in your own name.
What limits do physical therapy clinics usually carry?
Most carry $1M per claim and $3M aggregate on professional liability, with general liability at similar limits. Hospital and school contracts sometimes ask for more.
Are telehealth visits covered?
Many policies cover them, for patients in states where you hold a license. Treating someone located where you are not licensed can fall outside coverage.
How fast can I get a certificate?
Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.
Can I pay monthly?
Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
