What pet groomers usually carry

  • Animal bailee
  • Workers’ comp
  • Commercial auto, for mobile vans

Watch for these in a grooming policy

  • Pets in your careGeneral liability usually excludes injury to an animal you are grooming, since it is in your care, custody, and control. Animal bailee coverage is what pays the vet.

  • Mobile groomingA grooming van needs commercial auto, coverage for the tub and dryers built into it, and animal bailee that applies inside the van.
  • Bites to your staffBites and scratches are common groomer injuries. They belong on workers’ comp, part-time bathers included.

What landlords and pet stores ask pet groomers for

  • Additional insuredA pet store or vet clinic that hosts your grooming room usually asks to be named.
  • Animal bailee limitHost stores may ask what you carry per animal.
  • Workers’ compProof of coverage for anyone who works in their building.

Questions pet groomers ask

Straight answers.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly.

Does my insurance pay if a dog is hurt during grooming?

Only with animal bailee coverage. General liability usually excludes animals in your care, so a nicked ear, a clipper burn, or a dryer injury needs bailee coverage to answer.

What if a dog bites a customer in my shop?

That is general liability: injury to someone who is not your employee. A bite to your own groomer is a workers’ comp claim.

How is pet grooming insurance priced?

Usually on revenue, the number of groomers, whether you work from a shop or a van, and your claims.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
