General liability, errors and omissions for locks that fail, coverage for key machines and stock in your van, and a bond, for mobile and storefront locksmiths.

A few quick questions, then we send you your price. Many trades get it in minutes.

What locksmiths usually carry

  • General liability, $1M / $2M
  • Errors and omissions
  • Tools, stock, and van contents
  • Commercial auto
  • Third-party crime bond
  • Workers’ comp

Watch for these in a locksmith policy

  • Break-ins after your workWhen a thief gets past a lock you installed or rekeyed, the claim alleges faulty work. Errors and omissions answers it; general liability may not.
  • Damage while you workA scratched car door on a lockout or a split frame on a drill-out can fall under the exclusion for property you are working on. Some locksmith policies give it back.
  • Master keysLosing a master key or a key code can mean rekeying a whole building. Many policies do not cover that cost unless it is added.
  • Alarm and access control workInstalling alarms, cameras, or access control is often a separate class. List it, or a claim tied to it may be excluded.

What property managers and commercial clients ask locksmiths for

  • Additional insuredProperty managers ask to be named on general liability.
  • Errors and omissionsClients with master key or access control systems often ask for proof of it.
  • BondMany clients ask whether you are bonded, meaning a bond that pays them if an employee steals.
  • Waiver of subrogationOn general liability and workers’ comp, for contract work.

Questions locksmiths ask

Straight answers.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly.

Does general liability cover a lock that fails?

It covers injury and damage to others. A claim that your work was faulty, like a lock that let a burglar in, is usually an errors and omissions claim.

Are the key machines and lock stock in my van covered?

Not by your auto policy. An inland marine floater covers equipment and stock on the road, and many carriers ask about locks, alarms, and where the van parks at night.

How is locksmith insurance priced?

Usually on revenue or payroll, your mix of automotive, residential, and commercial work, whether you do safes or access control, and your claims.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
