What food manufacturers usually carry

  • General liability with products, $1M / $2M
  • Product contamination and recall
  • Spoilage
  • Equipment breakdown
  • Property and business income
  • Workers’ comp
  • Umbrella

Watch for these in a food manufacturing policy

  • SpoilageA standard property policy does not pay for food that spoils when a cooler fails. Spoilage coverage, often part of equipment breakdown, does.
  • Utility outagesSpoilage from a power outage that starts away from your building needs utility services coverage. Many policies leave it out.
  • Undeclared allergensA missing allergen on a label is among the leading causes of food recalls. General liability excludes the recall itself; contamination coverage pays for it.
  • Co-packersIf a co-packer makes your product, a claim still comes to your brand. Get their certificate and ask to be named on their policy.
  • Tampering and threatsContamination policies can cover malicious tampering and extortion threats against your product. General liability does not.

What grocers and distributors ask food manufacturers for

  • Vendor endorsementGrocers ask to be named as a vendor on your products coverage, often at $1M or more.
  • Contamination coverageMany grocery and food service buyers now ask for proof of it.
  • UmbrellaNational chains often ask for $5M or more on top.
  • Hold harmlessSupply agreements often ask you to defend the buyer over claims tied to your food.

Questions food manufacturers ask

Straight answers.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly.

Is illness from our packaged food covered?

Usually, as a products claim under general liability. Keep lot codes, production records, and supplier certificates, since they limit how far a claim or recall reaches.

What is the difference between recall and contamination coverage?

Recall pays to pull product from the market. Contamination coverage adds lost profit, the cost to replace product, and often help from a crisis consultant.

How is food manufacturing insurance priced?

Usually on sales, the foods you make, your allergen and sanitation controls, your equipment values, and your claims.

How fast can I get a certificate?

Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
