Insurance for hair salons.
General liability, professional liability for color and chemical services, property, and workers’ comp, for salons with employees, booth renters, or both.
What hair salons usually carry
- General liability, $1M / $2M
- Professional liability
- Property and salon equipment
- Business income
- Workers’ comp
- Employment practices liability
Watch for these in a salon policy
- Service injuriesMany general liability policies exclude injury from the service itself: a scalp burn from a relaxer, a reaction to color, a nick from shears. Professional liability is what answers those.
- Booth rentersA stylist who rents a booth runs a separate business, and your policy does not cover their work. Require their own general and professional liability, with your salon named.
- Services the policy listsMany salon policies cover only the services they name. Keratin treatments, extensions, lash work, and waxing may need to be added before you offer them.
- Your own product lineProducts sold under your salon’s label make you the manufacturer if a client reacts to one. Tell us, since it is rated apart from reselling other brands.
What landlords and property managers ask hair salons for
- Additional insuredThe landlord named on your general liability, usually at $1M per occurrence and $2M aggregate.
- Waiver of subrogationYour insurer gives up the right to recover from the landlord after a claim it pays.
- Tenant improvementsCoverage for the build-out you paid for: shampoo bowls, stations, plumbing, and lighting.
- Storefront glassMany retail leases make you insure the front windows.
Questions hair salons ask
Straight answers.
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
Do booth renters at my salon need their own insurance?
Yes. Your policy covers your business and your employees, not an independent renter. Ask each renter for a certificate showing general and professional liability, with your salon named as additional insured.
Is a client who slips on hair clippings covered?
Usually, under general liability, which covers injuries on your premises. An injury from the service itself falls under professional liability instead.
How is hair salon insurance priced?
Usually on the number of stylists, your revenue, the services you offer, and your claims. Chemical services and extensions often rate higher than cuts and blowouts.
Can I pay monthly?
Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
