Insurance for barbershops.
General liability, barber professional liability for razor work and hot towels, property, cash coverage, and workers’ comp, for shops with employed barbers or chair renters.
What barbershops usually carry
- General liability, $1M / $2M
- Barber professional liability
- Property and barber chairs
- Money and securities
- Business income
- Workers’ comp
Watch for these in a barbershop policy
- Razor workStraight razor shaves and lineups bring cut and infection claims. Check how the policy treats infection, since many policies added communicable disease exclusions after 2020.
- Hot towelsA towel from the warmer that burns a client’s face is a professional liability claim. General liability alone often leaves it out.
- Cash on handProperty policies cover little or no cash. If you take cash, money and securities coverage pays for a robbery or a break-in.
- Complimentary drinksA free beer or whiskey with a cut can fall outside host liquor coverage, and some policies exclude alcohol outright. Tell us if you pour.
- Chair rentersA barber who rents a chair needs a policy of their own. Keep a current certificate from each one, since a claim against a renter often names the shop too.
What landlords ask barbershops for
- Additional insuredYour landlord named on general liability, often with the property manager.
- Liability limitsMost leases set $1M per occurrence and $2M aggregate. Some shopping centers ask for an umbrella on top.
- Waiver of subrogationOn property and liability, so neither insurer can pursue the other side after a loss.
Questions barbershops ask
Straight answers.
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
Do I need professional liability if I only cut hair?
Yes. General liability often excludes injury from the service, so an infected razor nick or a hot towel burn needs professional liability to answer.
Is cash covered if the shop is robbed?
Only with money and securities or crime coverage. Most property policies cover little or no cash, even in a locked drawer.
How is barbershop insurance priced?
Usually on the number of chairs, your revenue, whether you offer shaves or chemical services, and your claims.
Can I pay monthly?
Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
