Insurance for business consultants.
Professional liability, general liability, and cyber for management, operations, and strategy consultants, with the certificates a client’s vendor onboarding asks for.
What business consultants usually carry
- Professional liability (E&O)
- General liability
- Cyber liability
- Business owner’s policy
- Hired and non-owned auto
- Workers’ comp
Watch for these in a consultant’s E&O policy
- Promised resultsMost E&O excludes a promise that your plan will hit a number, like a savings target or a revenue goal. Keep outcome promises out of proposals and statements of work.
- Fee disputesWhen a client withholds your fee or demands it back, that dispute is usually excluded. The policy answers the client’s losses, not your invoice.
- Indemnity clausesClient agreements often make you indemnify them for any loss, even one you did not cause. Most policies cover only what you would owe without that clause.
- Advice outside your fieldLegal, tax, investment, and engineering advice are often excluded from a consultant’s policy. Declare any of it you give.
- SubconsultantsYour policy may cover your liability for a subconsultant’s mistake, but not the subconsultant. Ask each one for their own E&O.
What clients and procurement teams ask business consultants for
- Professional liability, often $1M or $2MWritten into the master services agreement, and many ask you to keep it for two or three years after the work ends.
- General liability naming the clientProcurement teams ask for it even for office-only work, with the client as additional insured.
- Cyber limitsIf you log in to client systems or hold their data, onboarding often asks for cyber coverage too.
Questions business consultants ask
Straight answers.
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
What does a consultant’s E&O actually cover?
Claims that your advice or work cost a client money, such as a failed rollout or a missed deadline, including the cost to defend them.
Am I covered when I drive to a client’s office?
Your personal auto policy answers first. Hired and non-owned auto protects the business when a claim goes past it, and covers rental cars on business trips.
Do I need coverage after a project ends?
Yes, because E&O is claims-made: the policy in force when the claim arrives is the one that answers. Keeping it continuous, with the same retroactive date, covers past projects.
How fast can I get a certificate?
Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.
Can I pay monthly?
Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
