Insurance for web designers and developers.

Technology E&O, cyber, and media liability for designers and developers who build, host, and maintain client sites, including the stores and forms that take payments and personal data.

A few quick questions, then we send you your price. Many trades get it in minutes.

What web designers usually carry

  • Technology E&O
  • Cyber liability
  • Media liability
  • General liability
  • Computers and equipment
  • Business owner’s policy

Watch for these in a web designer’s policy

  • Accessibility lawsuitsSite owners sued over accessibility often turn to the designer who built the site. Some policies exclude these claims outright, so check yours.
  • Hosting client sitesIf you host sites, an outage or breach on your server is your claim. Tech E&O and cyber need to cover hosting, not only design.
  • Plugins you maintainMaintenance contracts put updates on you. A breach through a plugin you did not patch is a claim, and cyber applications ask how you manage updates.
  • Checkout pagesSkimming code on a client’s checkout page can bring a claim for the client’s forensic costs and card fines. Many policies sublimit card fines.
  • Domains and certificatesA domain or security certificate you manage lapses, and the site goes dark. That is a service error, so your policy must cover services, not only code.

What clients and agencies ask web designers for

  • Tech E&O certificateAgencies that subcontract builds often require $1M, and ask to be named on your general liability.
  • Data protection termsClients whose sites collect personal data ask how you secure logins and backups, and for cyber limits to match.
  • Infringement indemnityContracts ask you to cover claims that your code or content infringes. Keep it to what you supplied, not client materials.

Questions web designers ask

Straight answers.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly.

Am I liable if a client’s site gets hacked?

You can be, if the client claims your build or maintenance let the attacker in. Tech E&O and cyber together answer that claim; the client’s own losses belong on its own cyber policy.

Does my policy cover a launch that misses its date?

If the client claims your error or delay cost them money, most tech E&O defends it. Refunds of your fee, or delays you agreed to, usually are not covered.

Do I need media liability if I only write code?

If you place images, text, or fonts on a site, yes. Content is where copyright and trademark claims start, even when the client picked it.

How fast can I get a certificate?

Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.
