Insurance for bakeries.
General liability with products coverage, property, equipment breakdown, and workers’ comp for retail and wholesale bakeries, from the deck oven to the cakes you deliver.
What bakeries usually carry
- General liability, $1M / $2M
- Products and completed operations
- Property and ovens
- Equipment breakdown
- Product recall
- Workers’ comp
- Hired and non-owned auto
Watch for these in a bakery policy
- AllergensAn undeclared nut, egg, or wheat allergen is one of the most common reasons food is recalled. General liability covers a reaction, not the cost of pulling product off shelves.
- Your own productGeneral liability pays when a pastry makes someone sick. It does not pay to remake a wedding cake that collapsed on the drive to the venue.
- Wholesale accountsSelling to grocers and cafes puts your bread on someone else’s shelf. Many buyers want a vendor endorsement and higher products limits than a counter shop carries.
- Cake deliveriesDeliveries in a personal car need hired and non-owned auto on your policy. A van titled to the bakery needs commercial auto.
- Baking at homeA homeowners policy usually excludes a business run from your kitchen. Home bakers who sell at markets usually need a commercial policy to get a booth.
What landlords and grocers ask bakeries for
- Vendor endorsementStores that resell your breads and pastries ask to be named as vendors, often on CG 20 15.
- Products aggregateGrocery buyers often ask for $2M for products and completed operations.
- Additional insuredYour landlord, on general liability, for the space you lease.
- Waiver of subrogationLandlords and larger grocers often ask for it on general liability.
Questions bakeries ask
Straight answers.
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
How is bakery insurance priced?
Usually on sales, split between retail and wholesale, plus the value of your ovens and build-out. Wholesale accounts and delivery add to it.
Is a customer’s allergic reaction covered?
Yes. A reaction to something you baked is a products claim under general liability. Clear labels and a written allergen process are what carriers want to see.
Do I need product recall insurance?
If you sell wholesale, it is worth a quote. General liability excludes the cost of a recall: pulling product, notifying buyers, and destroying stock.
How fast can I get a certificate?
Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.
Can I pay monthly?
Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
