Insurance for wineries and tasting rooms.
Property, products and liquor liability, and workers’ comp for wineries and tasting rooms, with wine in barrels, tanks, and bottles valued the way it sells.
What wineries usually carry
- General liability, $1M / $2M
- Liquor liability
- Property, tanks, and barrels
- Bottled wine at selling price
- Equipment breakdown
- Business income
- Workers’ comp
Watch for these in a winery policy
- Valuing finished wineMany property policies value stock at what it cost you to make. Selling price valuation pays for bottled wine at what it would have sold for.
- Grapes on the vineGrowing crops are excluded from property policies. Frost and hail damage to the vineyard needs crop coverage, which is written separately.
- Tanks and valvesWine lost to a failed valve or a split tank can fall under the mechanical breakdown exclusion. Ask for coverage on the wine itself, not just the tank.
- Weddings and concertsEvents on the grounds add guests, outside caterers, and more drinking. Many winery policies limit events unless they are listed.
- Club shipmentsCases on their way to club members are often outside your property coverage. A transit policy covers them until they are delivered.
What distributors and event clients ask wineries for
- Additional insuredCouples and corporate clients ask to be named for their event date.
- Liquor liabilityEvent clients and distributors both ask for proof, often at $1M.
- Vendor endorsementDistributors and retailers carrying your wine may ask to be named on your products coverage.
- Primary and noncontributoryEvent contracts often ask that your policy answer before the client’s.
Questions wineries ask
Straight answers.
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
How is winery insurance priced?
Property is priced on buildings, equipment, and the wine in barrels and bottles. Liability is priced on sales, split among tasting room pours, events, and wholesale.
Are tastings covered by general liability?
No. A winery is in the business of making and selling alcohol, so the liquor exclusion applies. Liquor liability covers the tasting room and, if you add it, off-site events.
Is wine stored at a custom crush facility covered?
Only if your policy covers property at that address. Wine made or stored at another facility is often excluded unless the location is listed.
How fast can I get a certificate?
Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.
Can I pay monthly?
Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
