What nonprofits usually carry

  • Directors and officers
  • General liability
  • Employment practices liability
  • Property and contents
  • Hired and non-owned auto
  • Volunteer accident
  • Crime and fidelity
  • Cyber liability

Watch for these in a nonprofit policy

  • Board liabilityBoard members can be sued personally over the organization’s decisions. Directors and officers coverage defends them, and many volunteers will not serve without it.
  • Employment claimsEmployment disputes are a large share of nonprofit D&O claims. Make sure employment practices is included, not excluded.
  • Hurt volunteersWorkers’ comp usually does not reach volunteers, and general liability pays only if the organization is at fault. Volunteer accident coverage pays their medical bills either way.
  • Cash bars at fundraisersSelling drinks at an event can count as being in the liquor business. Add liquor liability for any event with a cash bar.
  • Theft from withinEmbezzlement by a trusted staffer or volunteer treasurer is a common nonprofit loss. Crime coverage pays it back; general liability does not.

What funders and landlords ask nonprofits for

  • Grant requirementsGovernment and foundation grants often set minimum limits and ask for proof before funds are released.
  • Additional insuredLandlords and event venues, on your general liability.
  • Abuse coverageFunders of youth and elder programs often require abuse and molestation coverage.
  • Crime coverageSome funders ask that anyone handling grant money be covered for theft.

Questions nonprofits ask

Straight answers.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly.

Why do we need directors and officers coverage if we have general liability?

General liability covers injuries and property damage. Directors and officers covers claims about decisions: firing staff, spending restricted funds, or breaching bylaws.

Are volunteers who drive for us covered?

Their own auto insurance pays first. Hired and non-owned auto protects the organization when a crash leads to a claim against you.

Do we need separate coverage for a one-day event?

Many annual policies cover events you host. Large events, alcohol sales, rides, or fireworks may need a special event policy or an endorsement.

How fast can I get a certificate?

Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
