Insurance for churches and houses of worship.
Property for the sanctuary, stained glass, and steeple, plus liability, abuse and molestation coverage, and directors and officers, for churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples.
What congregations usually carry
- Property, including stained glass and steeples
- General liability
- Abuse and molestation coverage
- Directors and officers
- Pastoral counseling liability
- Hired and non-owned auto
- Crime coverage for offerings
- Valuable articles
Watch for these in a house of worship policy
- Stained glassSome policies cap stained glass at a low limit or pay only its depreciated value. Have it appraised and listed at what it would cost to recreate.
- Steeples and older buildingsRebuilding a steeple, or bringing an older building up to current code, can exceed the building limit. Ordinance or law coverage pays for the code upgrades.
- Organs, art, and sacred objectsA pipe organ, artwork, or sacred vessels may need a schedule of their own. A standard contents limit often falls short of their value.
- Safety teamsIf members carry firearms as a safety team, tell us. Many carriers ask about training, and some exclude armed security.
- Youth ministryNurseries, youth groups, and camps need abuse and molestation coverage. Carriers often ask about screening, two-adult rules, and how you respond to reports.
What lenders, landlords, and camps ask congregations for
- MortgageeLenders on the building, named on the property coverage at full replacement cost.
- Additional insuredSchools and theaters you rent for services, on your general liability.
- Abuse coverage for tripsCamps and retreat centers often want to see it before your youth group arrives.
Questions congregations ask
Straight answers.
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
Are our clergy covered when they counsel members?
Only with pastoral counseling coverage, which many house of worship policies offer as an add-on. General liability does not cover counseling advice.
Are board members and elders protected?
Directors and officers coverage defends trustees, elders, and board members over decisions such as staff dismissals or disputes over property.
What happens when outside groups use our building?
Weddings, recovery groups, and community events should bring their own liability coverage and name you. Get their certificate before the date.
Is our van covered?
An owned van needs commercial auto. Carriers often limit 15-passenger vans and ask for a list of approved drivers.
Can I pay monthly?
Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
