What bookkeepers usually carry

  • Bookkeepers professional liability
  • Cyber and data breach
  • Social engineering fraud
  • Crime, including client funds
  • Business owner’s policy
  • Hired and non-owned auto

Watch for these in a bookkeeping policy

  • Payroll tax depositsA missed or late payroll tax deposit is one of the most common bookkeeping claims. Make sure payroll services are listed on your policy, not assumed.
  • Fake payment requestsA spoofed email from a client’s vendor asks you to change bank details, and you pay. Social engineering coverage answers that, and it is often a small sublimit or left out.
  • Tax returns on the sidePreparing returns is a different exposure from keeping books. Many bookkeeping policies exclude it unless you declare it.
  • Deductible on defenseOn many policies the deductible applies to defense costs, so you pay the first dollars of a claim even when you did nothing wrong.
  • Working from homeA homeowner’s policy often limits business equipment and excludes injuries to clients who visit on business. A business policy covers both.

What business clients ask bookkeepers for

  • Proof of E&OClients who hand you their books and bank logins often ask for a certificate before you start.
  • Named on your crime coverageIf you pay a client’s bills, the client may ask to be named as loss payee on crime coverage that protects its funds.
  • Data securityClients increasingly ask how you store their records and whether cyber coverage would pay for a breach.

Questions bookkeepers ask

Straight answers.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly.

Am I covered if a client says I should have caught an embezzler?

Claims that you missed theft by a client’s employee are common. E&O can defend and pay them, as long as bookkeeping is a covered service and you took no part in the theft.

Do I need E&O if clients approve everything I do?

Yes. Approval does not stop a claim that your entries or reports were wrong, and a lender or buyer who relied on your books can bring one too.

What if a client’s account is hacked through my login?

That is a cyber claim. Cyber coverage pays to find out what happened, notify the people affected, and answer the client’s claim, up to its limits.

How fast can I get a certificate?

Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
