A few quick questions, then we send you your price. Many trades get it in minutes.

What auto repair shops usually carry

  • Garage liability
  • Garagekeepers
  • Property and tools
  • Employee tools
  • Workers’ comp
  • Hired and non-owned auto
  • Umbrella

Watch for these in a repair shop policy

  • Garage liability, not just general liabilityA standard general liability policy excludes injury and damage from autos. Garage liability, or the right auto coverage beside it, is what answers when a road test goes wrong.
  • Faulty workIf a brake job fails and the car hits someone, liability answers. The cost to redo your own work, and the parts you installed, usually does not.
  • Legal liability garagekeepersThe basic form pays only when the shop is legally liable. Direct coverage pays for a customer car damaged in your care regardless of fault.
  • Cars outside overnightCustomer cars left outside after hours are exposed to theft and vandalism. Many policies limit that unless the lot is fenced and lit.
  • LiftsA lift failure can injure a mechanic or a customer. Keep customers out of the bays and keep lift inspection records.

What landlords and fleet accounts ask auto repair shops for

  • Additional insuredYour landlord, on your garage or general liability.
  • Garagekeepers for fleet workFleet accounts often ask for proof their vehicles are covered while they sit in your shop.
  • Waiver of subrogationCommon in shop leases, on liability and property.

Questions auto repair shops ask

Straight answers.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly.

What is the difference between garage liability and garagekeepers?

Garage liability covers injury and damage your business causes to others. Garagekeepers covers the customer cars in your care. A repair shop needs both.

Is a customer’s car covered on a test drive?

Liability for the drive usually falls to garage liability, sometimes after the customer’s own auto policy. Damage to the car itself is a garagekeepers claim, if yours includes collision.

Are my mechanics’ own tools covered?

Usually only up to a small limit. Many shops add employee tools coverage, since a mechanic’s toolbox can be worth more than their truck.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
