What body shops usually carry

  • Garage liability
  • Garagekeepers, direct coverage
  • Property, booth, and equipment
  • Workers’ comp
  • Pollution liability
  • Umbrella

Watch for these in a body shop policy

  • Paint booth firesSpray booths are a leading cause of body shop fires. Many insurers want a suppression system and inspection records before they write the building.
  • Cars waiting on partsA car can sit for weeks waiting on parts or an adjuster. Garagekeepers limits have to cover everything on the lot on your busiest day.
  • Hail on the lotWith direct garagekeepers, your policy pays for hail damage on the lot regardless of fault. Legal liability coverage pays only if you were negligent.
  • Paint and solvent wasteSolvents, thinners, and paint waste fall under the pollution exclusion. A spill or disposal problem needs pollution coverage to answer.
  • Frame and structural workA frame repair that fails in a later crash can come back as a claim years on. Keep repair records and measurements for every job.

What landlords and direct repair programs ask body shops for

  • Garagekeepers limitDirect repair programs often set a minimum and prefer direct coverage.
  • Additional insuredThe program or the landlord, named on your garage liability.
  • Booth recordsLandlords often ask for the booth’s fire suppression and inspection records.

Questions body shops ask

Straight answers.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly.

Does garagekeepers cover a car damaged in a storm at my shop?

Only if your form covers it. Legal liability garagekeepers often will not pay, because hail is nobody’s fault. Direct coverage usually does.

Is the paint booth covered as property?

Usually, as equipment or as part of the building, depending on how it is installed. List its replacement value so a booth fire is not underinsured.

Do I need pollution coverage for paint and solvents?

Many shops do. The pollution exclusion in most policies leaves spills, fumes, and waste disposal uncovered unless you add it back.

How fast can I get a certificate?

Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.
