What auto parts stores usually carry

  • General liability with products
  • Property and inventory
  • Commercial auto for delivery
  • Hired and non-owned auto
  • Workers’ comp
  • Crime

Watch for these in an auto parts store policy

  • Parts you did not makeA defective part that causes a crash can reach you as the seller, even if you did not make it. Make sure products coverage is not excluded from your general liability.
  • Installing in the lotHelping a customer install a battery or wipers in your lot is service work. Many retail policies do not expect it, so tell us if your staff do it.
  • Parts runsDelivery runs to shops put drivers on the road all day. Employees in their own cars need hired and non-owned auto behind them.
  • Employee theftStock that walks out the back door is excluded by property insurance. Crime coverage for employee theft picks it up.
  • Used and rebuilt partsSelling used or remanufactured parts changes your products exposure. Tell us what share of sales they are.

What landlords and shop accounts ask auto parts stores for

  • Additional insuredYour landlord, on general liability, often primary and noncontributory.
  • Tenant improvementsMany leases require you to insure your build-out, shelving, and fixtures.
  • Proof of auto coverageShop accounts may ask for proof your delivery drivers are covered on their lots.

Questions auto parts stores ask

Straight answers.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly.

Can I be sued over a part I did not make?

Yes. A seller can be named in a product claim alongside the maker. Your products coverage defends you, and a vendor’s endorsement from the maker can shift the loss back to them.

Is my inventory covered at full value?

Only up to the limit you set. Set it to your peak stock, and ask about a peak season endorsement if stock swings through the year.

Do my delivery drivers need special coverage?

Company trucks go on commercial auto. Drivers in their own cars need hired and non-owned auto on your policy, since their personal coverage may not answer.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
