Insurance for snow plowing and ice management contractors.
General liability, commercial auto for plow trucks, workers’ comp, and equipment coverage for plowing, salting, and sidewalk crews, written around the slip-and-fall claims that follow every storm.
What snow removal contractors usually carry
- General liability, $1M / $2M
- Commercial auto, with plows listed
- Workers’ comp
- Spreaders, loaders, and skid steers
- Hired and non-owned auto
- Umbrella
Watch for these in a snow removal policy
- Slip-and-fall limitsMost snow claims are falls on ice days after a storm, and some policies limit or exclude them. Carriers also want service logs showing when you plowed and salted.
- Contractual liabilitySnow contracts often make you answer for every fall on the property. An endorsement called CG 21 39 strips coverage for liability you take on by contract, which can leave that promise uninsured.
- Damage to the lot you clearGouged pavement and broken curbs on the lot you are plowing can be excluded as damage to the property you are working on. Damage to a parked car or a building is a different claim.
- Plows on personal autoA personal auto policy may exclude plowing for hire. Trucks that plow for pay need commercial auto, with the blade and spreader on the policy.
- Subcontracted plow trucksSubs with their own trucks need their own general liability and auto, on file every season. Without it, their claims and their pay come back to you at audit.
What property managers and retail landlords ask snow removal contractors for
- Additional insuredFor ongoing and completed operations, since most falls happen after you have left the lot.
- Hold harmlessBroad indemnity for any fall on the property. Read it before you sign.
- Auto liabilityA set minimum on plow trucks and loaders.
- UmbrellaRetail centers and hospitals often require one.
