What appliance and furniture installers usually carry

  • General liability, $1M / $2M
  • Commercial auto
  • Motor truck cargo
  • Bailee coverage, for goods in your warehouse
  • Workers’ comp
  • Tools and equipment

Watch for these in an installer’s policy

  • Goods in your truckThe range or sofa you deliver belongs to the retailer or the customer. Auto and general liability exclude it, so it needs cargo or bailee coverage.
  • Water and gas hookupsA failed ice maker or washer line is among the costliest claims in this trade. Some installer policies exclude plumbing or gas connections, so list them if your crews make them.
  • Personal vehicles on routesMany personal auto policies exclude delivering goods for pay. Vans and box trucks on delivery routes need commercial auto.
  • Completed installsA shelf that falls or a dresser that tips weeks later is a completed operations claim. Some installer policies leave completed operations out or cap it low.

What retailers and property managers ask appliance and furniture installers for

  • Additional insuredRetailers ask to be named for installs you do for their customers.
  • Cargo limitA set cargo limit per truck for the goods you carry.
  • Auto liabilityA set minimum on delivery trucks, often $1M.
  • Workers’ compProof of coverage before you are given routes.

Questions appliance and furniture installers ask

Straight answers.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly.

Is an appliance covered if it is damaged on the way to the customer?

Not by auto or general liability. Cargo coverage pays for goods in your truck, and bailee coverage for goods in your warehouse.

Am I covered if a water line I connected leaks?

General liability usually pays for water damage to the home, if the policy allows plumbing hookups. The line itself is your work to replace.

How is installer insurance priced?

On revenue or payroll, the number of trucks, the goods you carry, and whether you connect gas or water.

How fast can I get a certificate?

Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.
