Insurance for structural and ornamental steel erectors.
General liability, workers’ comp, riggers liability, and high umbrella limits for structural and ornamental steel erectors, with the endorsements commercial GCs write into every subcontract.
What steel erectors usually carry
- General liability, $1M / $2M
- Workers’ comp
- Commercial auto
- Riggers liability
- Cranes and contractors equipment
- Installation floater
- Umbrella
Watch for these in a steel erection policy
- Steel on the hookSteel you are lifting belongs to someone else until it is set. General liability excludes property in your care, so a dropped load needs riggers liability.
- Collapse during erectionA partial collapse before the frame is braced and connected is the claim this trade fears. Some policies exclude collapse unless it is added back.
- Experience modIronworkers carry one of the highest workers’ comp rates, and your experience mod follows you onto every bid. One bad year stays in it for three.
- Injuries to other tradesWorkers from other trades hurt on your deck often sue you directly. Some policies exclude injury to any contractor’s employee on the project, which guts your coverage on a busy site.
What GCs and owners ask steel erectors for
- Additional insuredThe GC, the owner, and often the engineer, for ongoing and completed operations.
- Per-project aggregateCG 25 03, so one tower cannot use up your whole limit.
- UmbrellaLarger projects often require $5M or more on top.
- Waiver of subrogationOn every line, often including the umbrella.
Questions steel erectors ask
Straight answers.
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
Is a dropped beam covered?
Injury and damage to others from a dropped beam is covered by general liability. Damage to the beam itself, and to steel you are placing, needs riggers liability or an installation floater.
Why does my experience mod matter so much?
GCs use it to screen subs, and it changes what you pay for workers’ comp. A mod above 1.0 can cost you bids before anyone looks at your number.
Do I need crane coverage if I rent the crane?
If you rent it bare, the lift is yours, and so is damage to the crane. With an operated rental, read whose policy the contract makes primary before the first pick.
How is steel erection insurance priced?
Mostly on payroll, which drives both workers’ comp and general liability, plus the height and type of structures you erect.
How fast can I get a certificate?
Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.
