What after-school programs usually carry

  • General liability
  • Abuse and molestation coverage
  • Accident medical for enrolled children
  • Hired and non-owned auto
  • Commercial auto
  • Workers’ comp
  • Directors and officers, for nonprofit programs

Watch for these in an after-school program policy

  • The host school’s policyThe district’s insurance covers the district, not your program. Most districts require yours to be primary and to name them.
  • Abuse and molestationMany policies add it only with a sublimit below the main limit. One-on-one mentoring and overnight trips draw more questions from carriers.
  • Summer camp seasonDay camps add field trips, more children, and longer days. Many policies need the camp listed and rated before summer starts.
  • SwimmingWater activities often must be disclosed, with certified lifeguards on duty. Some policies exclude swimming outright.

What host schools and churches ask after-school programs for

  • Additional insuredThe host district or church, on general liability, for the rooms and fields you use.
  • Abuse coverage minimumDistricts often set a minimum limit for abuse coverage and want it on the certificate.
  • Auto liabilityIf you move children between sites, hosts want to see auto coverage.
  • IndemnityFacility use agreements often make you defend the host. General liability covers many of these promises.

Questions after-school programs ask

Straight answers.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly.

Do we need our own insurance if we run inside a school?

Yes. The district’s policy protects the district. Most host schools will not sign a use agreement until they have your certificate.

What does accident medical cover for enrolled kids?

Medical bills for a child hurt at the program, whoever is at fault, usually after the family’s own coverage. Many hosts expect it for camps.

Are our volunteers covered?

Volunteers are often insureds for liability while they work for you. An injury to a volunteer needs volunteer accident coverage, since workers’ comp usually leaves them out.

How fast can I get a certificate?

Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
