What drywall contractors usually carry

  • General liability, $1M / $2M
  • Workers’ comp
  • Commercial auto
  • Hired and non-owned auto
  • Tools and equipment
  • Umbrella

Watch for these in a drywall policy

  • Piece-rate and 1099 hangersHangers paid by the board or on a 1099 are often counted as your payroll at audit, unless each one carries their own workers’ comp and general liability.
  • Mold behind the boardBoard hung over wet framing can grow mold inside the wall. Many policies carry a fungi or bacteria exclusion, often CG 21 67, that removes most of that claim.
  • Defective drywall exclusionsSome policies still carry an exclusion for defective imported drywall, written after a wave of sulfur-odor claims. It matters if you supply the board.
  • Metal studs and ceilingsMetal stud framing and acoustical ceilings are often separate classes from hanging and finishing. If you do them, make sure they are on the policy.
  • Overtime at auditIn most states, only the straight-time part of overtime counts for workers’ comp, but only if your payroll records show it separately.

What GCs and builders ask drywall contractors for

  • Blanket additional insuredMany GCs want blanket additional insured status that also reaches the owner and anyone else the GC’s contract names.
  • Notice of cancellationContracts often ask for 30 days’ notice to the GC if your policy is canceled.
  • Waiver of subrogationOn general liability and workers’ comp, WC 00 03 13 on the comp side.
  • Per-project aggregateCG 25 03 on larger commercial and multifamily jobs.

Questions drywall contractors ask

Straight answers.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly.

Are my piece-rate hangers employees for insurance?

For workers’ comp, often yes, unless each one carries their own policy. What you paid them shows up at audit, so collect certificates before they start.

Does my policy cover mold claims?

Usually very little. Most drywall policies exclude fungi and bacteria. Keeping board off wet framing, and writing down moisture readings before you hang, is the real protection.

Do my crew’s personal trucks need to be on my auto policy?

If they drive their own trucks on your business, a crash can come back to you. Hired and non-owned auto coverage answers for that, after their own policy pays.

How fast can I get a certificate?

Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
