What insulation contractors usually carry

  • General liability, $1M / $2M
  • Workers’ comp
  • Commercial auto
  • Spray rig and equipment
  • Contractor’s pollution liability
  • Umbrella

Watch for these in an insulation policy

  • Spray foamSpray polyurethane foam is excluded on many general insulation policies. If you spray, even a little, it has to be on the application or the claim may not be covered.
  • Odor and off-gassingHomeowners who say the foam smell drove them out of the house often run into the pollution exclusion. Some spray foam policies carve that coverage back in.
  • Attic firesBlown-in insulation packed against recessed lights, flues, or chimneys can start a fire long after you leave. Completed operations is what answers for it.
  • Removing old insulationOld vermiculite in an attic may contain asbestos, which contractor policies exclude. Removal is often a separate class from installing, so list it.
  • Promised energy savingsIf a customer says the savings you promised never came, that is not injury or property damage, so general liability won’t answer. Keep savings promises out of your contracts.

What builders and homeowners ask insulation contractors for

  • Additional insuredBuilders usually ask for ongoing and completed operations, on a blanket basis.
  • Pollution coverageCommercial and multifamily jobs increasingly ask spray foam contractors for contractor’s pollution liability.
  • Waiver of subrogationOn general liability and workers’ comp, WC 00 03 13.
  • UmbrellaProduction builders often set $1M to $2M over your primary limits.

Questions insulation contractors ask

Straight answers.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly.

Is spray foam covered under a regular insulation policy?

Often not. Many insulation policies exclude spray polyurethane foam, or cover it only when it is listed. Tell us what share of your work is spray foam so it is rated for what it is.

What if a homeowner says the foam smell made them sick?

That claim usually tests the pollution exclusion. A policy that gives back limited pollution coverage for spray foam, or a separate pollution policy, is what answers it.

Is my spray rig covered?

Not by auto insurance. The proportioner, hoses, and generator in the trailer or box truck need equipment coverage of their own, listed at what they would cost to replace.

How fast can I get a certificate?

Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
