Insurance for notaries and signing agents.
The notary bond your commission requires, notary errors and omissions, and coverage for loan signing work, for mobile notaries, signing agents, and offices that notarize for customers.
What notaries usually carry
- Notary bond
- Notary errors and omissions
- Loan signing agent coverage
- Cyber liability
- General liability
- Business owner’s policy, for an office
Watch for these in a notary’s bond and E&O
- Notarizing for your employerAn employer’s coverage usually protects the employer, and only for its own work. Signings you do on the side under your commission need your own E&O.
- Forged signaturesMany notary claims start with an impostor you notarized. A complete journal entry and ID record is your best defense, even where a journal is optional.
- Loan package mistakesA missed page or wrong date can delay a closing, and signing services may pass the cost to you. Some notary E&O covers notarial acts only, not signing agent work.
- Remote online notarizationMany states require a separate authorization to notarize over video, and not every E&O policy covers it. Check both before your first remote signing.
What signing services and title companies ask notaries for
- E&O at their minimumEach service sets its own limit, and title companies tend to ask for more than signing services do.
- Proof of commission and bondServices check both before assigning work, and again when either renews.
- Named as certificate holderSome title companies ask to be listed on your E&O certificate before they send signings.
Questions notaries ask
Straight answers.
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
Is my notary bond the same as insurance?
No. The bond pays people harmed by your mistake, then the surety collects that money back from you. E&O pays your defense and the claim, with nothing to repay.
How much E&O does a signing agent need?
At least what your signing services require, often $25,000 to $100,000. Agents who handle many loan packages often choose more.
Does my E&O cover every document I notarize?
Most notary E&O covers errors in your notarial acts, whatever the document. Signing agent duties beyond the notarization, like page checks and returns, need signing agent coverage.
How fast can I get a certificate?
Once your policy is bound, you request certificates from your client login, with the wording your contract asks for.
Can I pay monthly?
Yes. Most policies can be paid in full or monthly.
